William Houston of Iredell County, NC, had been a charter member of the Debating Society. When the Society divided on July 2, 1795, Houston remained with the original group, which took the Greek name Dialectic Society on August 25, 1796. Houston was one of seven students in the University's first graduating class of 1798. He became a physician.
